No kidding, in the past week or so, I have observed every member of my family donning my slippers both in and outside of the house. Furthermore, it has been going on for many years.
I used so say, “Hey, those are my slippers!” Quite often the response was something like, “Yep, they are.” It is just an unspoken rule that my slippers are up for grabs. Many have been the times when I have gone in search of my own slippers only to have to wait for someone else in the family to decide they are finished with them.
Oddly enough, everyone in my family has their own slippers and I fail to comprehend their infatuation with mine. After asking a few questions, here’s what I’ve been able to glean in understanding.
1. Dad’s slippers are always where we can find them.
Well, no kidding! I take the time and effort to put them back after each use, whereas you all do not.
2. Dad’s slippers are easy to get into. He’s got them all broken in.
Ok, I can see that. Who wants to tie laces or put on shoes that aren’t broken in? Until recently, my feet were the biggest in the house, making my slippers easy to jump into for quick runs to the mailbox. My son has now taken over the big foot department.
3. Dad’s slippers aren’t all ragged.
Right, that’s because I take care of them. I still have one very expensive pair of slippers that I bought over 17 years ago when I first got married. They look a little worn, but for the most part are in good shape.
I guess what my family is telling me by their actions is that they like the ease and comfort of enjoying the things that I work hard to provide, even if I intended some of them for myself. Funny thing is, I enjoy seeing them take advantage of my provision. I think that’s how God feels about us.
