Amazing loveRecently a friend commented, “I wish someone would look at me, like some people look at menus.”

It was such an unusual and thought provoking statement that it stuck with me for days. I think at the core of this expression there is a longing that resonates in each of us to be known completely, desired, and loved unconditionally. Most of us long for this kind of unconditional love and search for it through human relationships. Hollywood often portrays the message that if you could just meet the right person, your soulmate, you would find this kind of a relationship. As I was pondering the almost universal longing in this statement,  I opened my devotional and read the passage for the day in Psalms 139:1-6 (GNB)

“Lord you have completely examine me and you know me. You know everything I do; from far away you understand all my thoughts. You see whether I am working or resting; you know all my actions. Even before I speak, you already know what I will say. You are all around me on every side, you protect me by your power. Your knowledge of me is too deep, it is beyond my understanding.”

How on topic was that?! (It never fails to thrill me when God speaks to my thoughts through His word that way!) Sometimes we turn to humans for something only God can give which always leads to disappointment, hence multiple broken relationships. How awesome to know that what we all long for, God is quietly offering to us when we come to Him. To be completely desired, known and yet loved so deeply that He would die for our shortcomings and failures. “Amazing love, how can it be, that you my king would die for me?”*  Colleen Biermann
